Review: Burger Study Earns Top Marks on Opening Night

Indianapolis’s newest burger joint Burger Study, the latest offspring from the owners of Indy’s iconic St. Elmo’s Steak House, is now open. Located on Georgia Street in downtown’s Circle Center Mall, this is not just another run-of-the-mill restaurant selling pre-packaged frozen patties as gourmet burgers. This is the real deal, with a menu focused on local ingredients from Hoosier purveyors, including Smoking Goose Meatery and Tulip Tree Creamery.

Walking in the space, the polished interior is warm and welcoming. Adorned with brass banker’s lamps and sculpted busts, the atmosphere is purposefully scholarly and elegant. The interior of Burger Study emulates those old world Ivy League libraries, ornamented with antique bound books, stitched burgundy leather seating, and dark wood accents.

The burgers are high-end fare, exploring classic flavors with with top notch ingredients. Burger Study's take on the ubiquitous bacon-cheeseburger, dubbed the Homecoming, comes with smoky gouda cheese and ever-so-sweet root beer glazed bacon from Smoking Goose. The tater tots, drenched in beer cheese and topped with bacons and pretzels for added crunch are as sublime and dangerously addictive as they sound.

For the full Burger Study experience, order the Prime Degree with St. Elmo Steak dry-aged beef, bacon, black pepper BellaVitano cheese, and a black pepper aoili all packed between a soft sesame seeded brioche bun. The patty is juicy, well seasoned, and expertly cooked. The varying layers of aromatic black pepper from the aoili and the punchy umami-laden cheese and seasoned patty come together to create a truly magnificent burger. The Prime Degree has all the makings of an instant classic.

Burgers don't come much better than those at Burger Study, the newest edition to the pantheon of Indy burger excellence. It's a new opening that deserves both your attention and your appetite.
